Driveshaft questions
#1
First off, I just put a 32 spline yoke that the driveshaft shop told me was for 4l80e or th400 that did not need a conversion joint as it is the same series as the 1500 shaft I have as opposed to 1350. It has 6" of splined shaft. I put it in the tailshaft of my trans and it feels like there is a spring inside. If I push hard I can get it down to 1.75" of exposed shaft and when I release there are 2.75" exposed. Is my tailshaft spring loaded? Is this too much exposed yoke? Should I have it shortened? I'm trying to set my carrier bearing location since I'm going from 1 piece shaft to 2 piece so I'm pretty much just playing with the lengths of everything right now until I find what should work and then go from there.
Also, what length are your guys' 2 piece driveshafts on extended cabs? I bought a 2 piece ecsb 2wd driveshaft but it seems to be the right length with the 80e yoke on it although I should have had to shorten it. I'm thinking I was given an extended cab super short bed driveshaft, which might be a blessing if it means avoiding getting the shaft shortened.
EDIT: took off the tailshaft housing and found a cover type deal over the forward half of the output shaft. The driveshaft is sliding in there and air pressure is building and kicking it back out, although it does fit in and slide in 2" with good force. What is this cover? Am I doing something wrong? Should I just get the yoke shortened? it is an 8" yoke from end to center of u-joint and I have ~6" of splines on my output shaft.
