Default Detroit Truetrac Set Up Problem???

When installing the Truetrac this weekend on my 03 I ran into an issue. I just swapped the G80 for the new Truetrac, swapped new bearings, torqued everything to spec and checked the backlash (between .003-.005). When the main caps are loose the backlash is within .003-.005 all the way around the ring gear. When the caps are torqued to spec there is a tight spot for about 40 degrees and the other 320 are free. The tight spot is noticeable by hand and the tolerance is tighter .002-.003.

I've thought it could be the ring gear not fully seated (maybe i missed a bur or flaw), or bad new bearings. Anyone have this issue happen before?

It sounds like there could be debris under the ring gear. In order to check it properly it needs to have both caps tightened down.

You could remove the ring gear and install the truetrac. Put a dial indicator on the machined surface where the gear is mounted and turn it over to make sure it is true.

Update:
After taking it apart and double checking for debris under the ring gear it turns out that the Truetrac itself is out .002 after the caps have been tightened. Thanks for pointing us in that direction!

I've been wanting a truetrac. Is this something you can fix? I'm still a truck noob and learning.

I'd love your input once you start driving it!

I'd say go for it. I've had three different truetrac's in different builds and this was the first time I've ran into a small issue. After setting it up again I feel a lot better about it!

Do you feel a 10 bolt with truetrac can handle quite a bit of HP/Torque?

Yes, I believe there are members in the 10's with built 10 bolts. I think it was dirt track racer 81. Yep, here's a quote from him:

Just a truetrac and motive gears, stock axles.
That's from this thread:

I put a truetrac into a 95 14 bolt and I just used the bearings that came in the install kit from Yukon. I'm 95% sure they're the same as the stock bearings, the kit is specific to your entire diff not just the carrier you put in it.
