Creaking sound when turning

grease the boot before replacing the shaft unless you're actually feeling a clunk. my wife's Tahoe was making a groaning noise that I could feel in the steering wheel, but no actual pops. I ordered all of that crap, then found out that simply lubricating the boot around the shaft 100% fixed my issue (as it did for the OP). I could have sworn the noise and vibes were coming from the suspension somewhere and thought I needed new bushings somewhere. give it a shot. if it doesn't work, it's free.

Just finished the ISS and bearing. Took all of 30 minutes. Easiest thing I've done yet on GMT800. Greased boot per Stewart's rec. Knocking is GONE. Interestingly enough I found the ISS had already been replaced and indeed there was play in the shaft. So even GM's revised ISS is crap. From the pics I've seen I honestly think Dorman's shaft has a superior design, but I dont want Dorman junk in my truck. The new GM shaft I put in is supposedly the latest revision. The bearing was the original and it had some play so out it came. Putting the new bearing in wasn't nearly as difficult as people say. Couple taps with a 15/16" wrench on the steering shaft and it goes right in.

I found putting the new bearing in was easy, as well. Dunno who had a hard time with it. It didn't want to travel the final 1/4" or so, I ended up gently tapping around the flat area using a tiny ball peen hammer to get the tab to lock in.
The hardest part I had doing the ISS and bushing was just getting the shaft to separate because the slide portion of it was a little frozen with old grease; that made it not want to move after I had it unbolted.
Mine was doing the rattling all the time so I knew the shaft had to go. The bearing just seemed wise to do while I was in there. For records I did my '06 at 89500 with supposedly whatever the current revision of parts was in late 2017; 19329330 for the shaft and 88963617 bearing. We'll see how long they last.
