Default 4l60 to 4l80 to t56

so i am swapping transmissions yet again. should be the last time. i recently went to a 4l80 and it was sweet but just not quite what i wanted. found a guy with a gto that wanted to trade transmissions so im goin for it

the great thing is that gm made most of their transmissions the same basic size. swaped my original yoke back onto the original driveshaft, this shaft is 58 inches and has not had to be shortened yet. i had bought a tyler scruggs built crossmember for the swap to an 80 and it seems as though i might be able to keep it for the t56. what i am reading is that the gto trans and 4l80 trans are the same mount and distance from the bellhousing to the mount.

the clutch is a pretty hardcore clutch. it may end up being to much for me and my uses. monster stage 3. but i plan to run it initially and if i dont like it ill swap with the clutch in my vette. monster stage 2.

so the only things i need to get figured out are the pedal, and how that will all connect to a gto master cylinder. if at all. and then the shifter position.
my truck has the middle seat and i would like to keep it. im thinking maybe i can move it back some kinda way. the only person that ever sits there is my 8 year old daughter, but it looks like its going to come up right under the cup holder.

otherwise evertying else should be good and ill be able to join the t56 truck ranks. any one have any measurements for shifter location on a gto t56?

Use a 5 speed crossmember
Shifter handle will be custom
Youll have to cut floor near seats or swap t56 over to front shift

This has been explained in a sticky

Youll want to find a stock truck master to use with the plastic clutch pedal

My t56 and 4l80 used different crossmembers

Master wont work with how GM pedal is without some serious work

well the swap is nearing completion. hit a few speed bumps and my kids were in town for a while also. all my needed holes have been drilled and cut. installing the pedal today after work. i plan to drill through the firewall and use longer bolts. i assume you could use a rivet nut but the kit for the gun is 100+ dollars. ive got it jumped out to start, gto starter installed, clutch and bellhousing in. i really just cant wait to drive this damn thing. i plan to just remove the middle seat and drive it with no console till i figure out how i want it to be done. hopefully i can get it all together and driving for zz top in biloxi. i want to get a few miles on the swap as i also plan to do the hot rod power tour with my son this year.

Sounds good man! I am still thinking of swapping one into my truck. Just hard to find one for the same kind of money as an 80e that isn't trashed.

I was also considering doing a few legs of the power tour this year, are yall doing the whole thing?

i was on the fence about doing the swap. my truck is really pretty clean and i wanted it to stay that way. so first 60e died at 75k, i replaced it with a stock 60 and added a shift kit. then the rear differential blew. fixed that with a true trac and 4.10s then blew the 60 again. so i knew that wasnt gonna be an option. found a 4l80(in horrible condition on the inside as i would find out) installed it with a 3200 rpm stall and started tuning. well that one blew a front seal. trans guy said it probably had a bad converter on it and needed a full rebuild. thats when i got a trade on this t56. i had to give $700 also but it worked.

i just really enjoy manual transmissions. i have one in my vette. swapped a 5 speed into my 66. have a 3 speed column shift in my 64 and now ill have one in the truck too.

as far as the power tour goes. jerry and i plan to be longhaulers. im from texas and i live in louisiana so it starts litterally right down the street from my house and then goes through several places where i have had or still have family. should be a good time.

Put the trans in today, what a bitch that was by my self. I can't wait to drive this thing!! Just need to bleed the clutch, install the drive shaft, and put the interior back in. I do have a slight issue. The yoke from my truck does not want to go on. Goes on about half an inch the stops. Anybody ever had an issue like this?

I had the same issue and was trying for an hour, then realized the yoke has a double wide spline. I lined that up to the one on the shaft and it slid right on.
