Default STS piping.

Well I was reading a post on ls1tech about sts exhaust piping and how it would help to spray/ wrap/spray the exhaust. So I'd thought I'd look into it. I have a heat gun, so I figured I would look at how much heat I was losing from the exhaust manifolds to the turbo. I started at the manifold 400*, at the cat (hollowed out) 360*. I got to the part where the sts piping was and the temp droped greatly 176*. Witch means that the coating inside and out helped to retain the heat inside the piping (the sts piping is coated, stock exhaust is not). Turbo was at 360*, exhaust side. so I figured I would go over board and paint the whole exhaust with 2000* vht high temp paint. I picked white because it reflects heat. I talked to sts and they said the hot sid of the turbo doesn't get any hoter than the exhaust manifold, about 500* less. The exhaust manifolds don't exceed 2000*, (I dont think) I plan on wraping the painted exhaust and then painting the wrap to protect the wrap from rotting. I painted it and temp are better. Temps at the exhaust manifold are still at 400*, cats are at 320*, sts piping is at 145* turbo is at 135-140*. It seams to be helping I think it will get better after the wrap. response seams alittle better. This test was done at idle, with the engine at operating temp. The guys on ls1tec was having boost issues (could not build enough boost) and this solved there problem. Some junked there headers and went back to exhaust manifolds. They also noted that the headers was hurting them because it was not coated. So they painted and wraped the header and it worked well. They say that heat is extreamly important to building boost, and if we are losing it through our exhaust, we could maybe spool faster. So I tryed it. I'll wrap it next weekend, and see if this helps any on the dyno.

Wraping the exaust will help greatly .did mine last week. whats that smell !pee...ew !!header wrap.

thanks for the test/ tips! i was wandering about wrapping my exhaust but was also concerened about wrot. but the paint should definitley help, what about that aluminizing spray? I think this will help keep the turbo heat optimal for drag racing situations.

Thanks for posting those results. I wonder what wrapping the exhaust post cat would do for me.....I have headers and they are ceramic coated.

I hope it helps, I have a boost problem. If I turn my boost all the way down, it should hit 15lbs of boost, (15psi spring in wastegate) it only hits 12, and then drops to 10 during the run. I am hoping this will help. It's still doing it. I hope with the wrap, it will help. It seams like my issue is elsewhere, but this cant hurt. Ceramic coating helps alot. I'll try to wrap it this weekend and see if it is worth it or not. I don't want you guys wasting your money, if it is not helping spool. I think it is helping so far, I am used to 20-18psi and am only seeing 12-10 right now. Its hard to say.

What kind of boost controller are you using?

Also, I see that you wrapped your intake piping by the exhaust manifold. Did you see a reduction in IAT's from doing that? What kind of wrap is that?

I had a specb2 I think, (I had problems with boost spike and no one knew how to use it)yanked that out so we could keep it simple. So I now have a bleeder valve/boost ****. Is it posible that my meth can be cooling my exhaust and in turn I am losing boost psi? I know I have valve shroud with the 6.0 heads, could that be why? I dont know. I don't have leaks.

We have been wrapping the exhaust on quite a few lately. I absolutely helps.
We did a Silverado SS that wasnt boosting very well in first gear unless you drove the hell out of it first. We wrapped from just after the cats all the way. Truck will stall into 6psi now and stays there. Its a little bit of a PIA with the exhaust on, but worth it.
We normally use 2" wrap, overlapping an inch on every round. Takes alot this way though.

wrapping the exhaust is a great idea. if your seeing 2000 degrees in your headers, your melting parts
