Default FI air filter question

O.K so I was wondering what your input was on free flowing airfilters with FI set-ups.
I would think the only benifit would be the turbo/supercharger wouldn't have to work as hard with a bigger more free flowing filter vs. a standered filter to get the same psi.
But pressure and flow are to different things right?
I would guess the charged air would be hotter with a more restrictive filter, but would it make that big of a differents?
The reason I ask is I'm still using the small STS cone filter that has seen some better days (some of the pleats are folded on one side). I was wondering if upgrading to much larger airfilter would be worth the cost.

Somewhere in the dark mysterious corners of this site is some research work done by Brian "Blown Chevy" regarding the sensitivity of the Radix to inlet air flow restrictions. Although his work focused mainly on throttle body diameter, he found that even small restrictions in intake air flow had a significant effect on performance. Ergo, I would recommend the largest and least restrictive filter possible, provided it still does an acceptable filtering job.

I know in the diesel world, restriction will cause higher egt temps. You may want to see how much vacuum you pull in your intake behind the filter, that will tell the whole story.

You should target for less than 2 inches vacuum in your inlet piping.

Cool

I don't know what difference it makes but I am running a 5"x9" dry filter from Amsoil. My K&N let a lot of dirt through and the inlet to the turbo was always covered in a light coating of brown dirt so I swapped it out for the dry filter. I have not noticed any return of the dirt in the inlet so far. The Amsoil filter also lets air in from the end.

i have 2 large cones. at some point i am sure larger wont do any better but if the filter you do have is a restriction then upgrading will help considerably.

With my STS setup on my Z-71 i put a Larger K=N Cone filter with the Xstreem top. It spooled up quicker and performed alot better than the one STS gives you. I think it was the RC-430 or close to that.
