Default the answer to how cheap can you turbo. look here

i built my own turbo kit with the help of KB racing manifold, here is the break down.

2007 yukon 5.3 was the car.

KB racing manifold $450.00
borg warner turbo $650.00 ( not cheap MP70, real garrett internals)
hot side stainless
mandrel bent pipe $200.00
JGS 60mm Wastegate $300.00 ( had it from my drag car)
intercooler pipe kit 3" $95.00
with couplers
31" x 18" intercooler CXracing $115.00
CXraing turbo blanket $60.00
header wrap $45.00
sent our injectors to FIC
to be modified to 42lber $200.00
oil drain plate - $12.00
oil drain fittings $30.00
oil feed $25.00
air filter $45.00
4inch intake pipe, $40.00
V- bands - $60.00
blow off valve $50.00
3" mandrel bent stainless exhaust tied into the stock muffler $100.00

half hour on the dyno to tune it via hptuners- $50.00 (been tuning w/ hp tuner for 8 years now)

total $2,502.00

this was shopping around and getting the best prices i could source, KB's manifold was the key, excellant quality and layed out perfect, So as you can see the price it takes to build your own. KB is the way to go. i also built this just for towing and not racing, the 60mm works great and builds boost 5psi at 1800rpm

Very nice!!!
whats the specs on the turbo?

I ran a Garrett 60mm rear mount and it towed very good. i wish i could find my old logs,i wanna say at 1600-1800 i could still get 6psi easy with a heavy trailer.

Nice. Only having to pay the license fee for tuning helps a bit too.

Did you order pre-bent pieces or did you have specific pieces made?

And just curious, is the 5.3 stock? And what converter are you running for towing with a turbo, stock as well?

i purchase two 90* 2.5" bends, i flex coupler 8" long, that is all i needed for the cross over pipe, i reused the flange off my stock ypipe. for the exhaust i bought 4- 3" 45* bends, that made the entire down pipe. i then welded that to the stock coupler and it bolts to the stock catback.

the yukon is all stock with 23" rims, stock 4l60e, stock motor.

i really did this to get more towing power, i was going to trade in the yukon for a denali or escalade with the 6.2, but the torque would never be good down around 2k rpm, plus the added cost of buying the car, i figured this was a good 2500.00 ad on to an already great car.

Sounds like that was pretty cheap at still, and i do agree with you for what Kb's selling its a hell of a deal, i went to his shop when i went to Tx2k12 the guy is great to deal with and i'd recommend his kits to everybody who wants to go turbo.

Does building 5 lbs at 1800rpm not completely kill your mpg for a DD? I would love that kinda power down low it just sounds different

Hell yeah!!!! Badass !!!

Nice budget build man!!

So what you get, prob another 80-100 horse ?

Like Nonnie i had a 60-1 STS kit back in the day and that 5.3 built nice boost low and towed nice!

I'd take a turbo 5.3 over a 6.2 anyday!!!!

Props to Kyle for great kits too!
