Default Air Filters? Cold air boxes do they help.

Right now several of our kits have the filter directly on the turbo.
While other are off to the side and slightly longer. Thats why we pulled them to the side.
And lastly a couple custom kits use the biggest things we can fit in the stock air box area.

My question is all these are still in the engine compartment. I have had customer tell me their air temps were cooler, with the filter off to the side. But none have compared with or without an air box to try to insulate the filter even more.
So has anyone compared IAT's with and with out an air box or shield?

couple of pics of the filter we currently are using.
left to right.
6" opening 10" long custom
4" opening 8" long off to the side
4" opening 5" long mounts directly to turbo

With your stage 2 kit filter directly mounted on the turbo, my iat's are 5-10 degrees above ambient... what's the problem?!?!? With meth its far below ambient.

Great question. Let's get some real numbers to back this stuff up.

I have not went atomics way with the nice huge rubber elbows and huge filter in the passenger side fender YET because of this exact question.

What Little i can add to this is my stock truck gained 12 rwhp and 15 rwtq, same dyno, same day, about 20 min between runs, stock vs volant intake. The intake tubes are way different same with the boxes. Maybe a huge nice tube with a box is the way??? Or just atomics huge tubes and filter. Someone has to have real data to back this stuff up

Also volnats paper filter was like 6 inch dia. Has any one flowed these compared to k&n filters? Might be worth buying another volant and making a 4 inch tube to connect the turbo and the box/filter

I can build a plastic shield o keep the heat away. But not sure it's needed.
We took up all the area we could.

What about running the 2790 series filters that the cummins guys run? There huge and flow pretty well. Best of all run a paper filter and forget the oiling and such.

I did one for my supercharged engine, and will be doing one for the turbo engine too. I have a ram air style hood that air will be coming through.
