I'm looking to buy a 1996 2 door Tahoe LT 4x4. It has about 250k on it, but the body and interior are in good condition and I'm going to be swapping in a Gen III 5.3 in it anyways so its the perfect candidate. I don't want to have constant nagging problems, so what are common issues with these? When I do the swap I want to do preventative maintenance as it will be my DD and I want it reliable.

I've seen you guys commonly point towards a 6.0L swap instead, but I've found take out 5.3s with all accessories, harness, and computer for $700 on ebay.

 

Well the intake gaskets and poppet valve fuel injectors are the biggest complaints, so a Gen 3/4 swap will rid you of that. Other than that, the front suspensions wear out quick (nothing new if you drive other GM products) and the same old GM fuel sending unit is in there. That's al I can think of off the top of my head.

 

Suspension as in bushings, shocks, tie rod ends? Doesn't sound too bad.

 

I've a 89Silvy, not a Hoe. So it's based on that platform. I got it w/ ~163k on it. I don't know the prior owner history, but was told it was driven all over U.S. My biggest compaint, & by that, I mean it really PISSED me off, electronic gremins! The dash lights/ controls lit in some places & not in others. Same B.S. I had w/ my 04!!!

Other than that, the factory GM paint peeled all over. It's just 1 of the GM's I've had w/ peelin paint! So it looks like ****.

The body is rusty from MI, but that could be attributed to our fine weather.

My best friend & I swapped in a LT1. A gen3/4 would be real sweet. Please post up pics on swap; I always like to see motor swaps, & what others went thru & their thoughts on what they would have or wouldn't do different. Good luck!

 

Not much to complain about..
I had some weather stripping issues, and steering wheel noise, not to sure if anyone else had those. Mine is a 98 though.

 

Looks like I've found a 1999 Tahoe LS 4x4 in much better shape that I'll probably be going with. I still intend on doing a 5.3 swap but I also want a dirtbike or an autocross track car. Decisions decisions!!

Not too much to complain about here. Besides the regular parts that would need replacing after time (complete front end rebuild would clear that up). The only real issue is the "electrical gremlins" that fastnblu said.
