Default Can I Build a CA legal 383 Stroker?

Hey guys, I've been going back and forth for a few year on which direction I want to take my truck, it' an '06 Sierra ECSB 5.3. I figured a 383 stroker would be the most feasible, money wise and the most likely to pass smog. I am having trouble understanding the laws and exactly what is or isn't approved

do any of you CA guys know the answer, or can you point me in the right direction? I would be a DD, but I would want the 383 to be pretty maxed out as far as the came and heads. NA only.

You CAN but you will need to pay careful attention to compression ratio and overlap on the cam.

We have done quite a few sales for short blocks/long blocks and cams in ca esp recently.

Email me and we can set you up!!

"Don't ask, don't tell"

Keep the chop in the cam to a minimum and you'll be good.

All you need to pass SMOG is a visual and OBDII check (no sniffer for post-2000 vehicles), I pass just fine even though my truck still has to go on the rollers .

Its alot more than keeping chop to a min for the sniffer counties. We have some pretty good sounding cams with negative overlap that will pass fine with a good tune.
Too much cr and cyl heat will cause high nox amd fail a test QUICK also. Some of that is in the tune with timing and fuel and some is in th physical parts.

Iowa.

If you are just looking for more power and tad more cid on a good budget going to an iron 5.7 is easier and will make a bit more power.

looking to get the most I can out of the small block. I'd like to do a 408, but I want to keep it simple.

I saw an article in one of the magazines they got 500hp out of a 5.3 stroked to a 383. This was on the engine dyno with longtubes, etc. which I know I won't get here in CA, but I'd like to see 450hp at the crank if possible.

450 crank out of an iron 5.7 is fairly easy even. 500 out of a 383 would be doable. For reference 385 hp at the wheels is 460 crank roughly. That's cam only ls1 territory. So 400 rwhp would be 500 crank.

I'm just trying to decide if I want to buy heads and install them with the cam I have laying around in the engine I have in my truck now, or save the money and just jump right to the new motor. I don't want to do a super low budget build, but it will take me longer to get the money together for a new engine.

I have a freshly rebuilt and updated level 5 4L65E from Finish Line and a Yank TT3000 convverter, so that part is done. I have a bunch of suspension stuff that is going on soon; sway bars, shocks, rear bags, etc and I will have a new Tru Trac and gears put in at the same time too, so when I do the engine, all the supporting mods will be done.

I just don't have a tuner out here anywhere. The nearest one will probably be LA or San Diego, which is at least 2 hours away.

I keep going back and forth. I want power now, but that sets me back a few thousand on building another engine.

I'll most likely end up buying a new short block for the project, so I'll keep you guys in mind when the time comes.
