Default tranny sucks after putting in 4.10's

It wont downshift into first when I am well within the rpm range of the motor.
I have a hypertech on it (I know it is junk, got it before being on this board)

Is a custom chip my only option? I am guessing that is it.

It also upshifts way to soon. I'm in friggin OD before like 30. It is annoying since I do lots of city driving.

Thanks for any input. I've searched this forum a ton, but I just dont feel like scouring today.

Not sure what you're asking, but not downshifting is a good thing, unless you really need it to. The lower gears allow you to stay in the power range longer. And downshifting to first all the time puts more wear and tear on the tranny.
As for upshifting too soon, you probably have two things going on:

Need to drive it a lil' harder through first and second a few times.
Get a tune to help with shift points (I'm not sure if Hypertech allows for gear changes; correcting shift point??)

I wouldn't say the tranny's crap, actually, I'd say you're making the tranny work easier, especially if you do a lot of city driving. You're probably getting better gas mileage too, unless you have a heavy foot.

yes custom tune from one of the sponsors.........I like blackbearperformance.com Justin has treated me well!

The reason is that your upshift and downshift points are still set to the same as when you had your other gear in it! So that needs to be changed and hypertech cant change that like you need it to!

That makes sense. You would think the hypertech would do that when you input the 4.10 ratio. Junk!

Actually I thought that adjusting for gears was one of the few things that the Hypertech was capable of

You need a retune. I ran 4.10s on the 3.42 tune for a while and it was all wrong. The truck felt down on power and the shift points were all wrong eventhough after a while the truck did relearn to shift properly with the 4.10s. After I got it retuned for the 4.10s it came to life.
