Have someone who knows what they are doing tune it first and that can be there if you have questions. There is a few good dvd's out there you can watch but it is really helpful to have someone get you a good base to start with.

dont really know anyone who knows how to tune. the closest shop that does tune is about 50 miles from me and would rather not want to drive back and forth. i mean i could learn slowly if that what it takes im in no hurry i just want to practice on my 5.3 so i know what to do when i drop my 6.0 in ( wont be for some months now though)

Read, read, read, read, read, read, and then read some more. Especially on the hptuners forum. Do not touch anything you dont know exactly what it does, and for things you think you know, read about them first before you change it.

Takes about 10k changes and months of hard work to figure it out, but in reality it will be a life long learning process since new changes occur regularly.

Id say you'd have to know alot about engines. More then just parts of a engine, but how they work. Fuel/air ratios, timing, when to add timing, when to add air and fuel. The list goes on. There's alot to learn.
