Default A/F Ratio gauge weird?

OK i got a couple of gauges, and im trying to hook them up. so i called up autometer because i got them used. and got the wiring schematics. what wire goes where basically.
well i hook this a/f ratio up and it doesnt work. doesnt light up or anything. and then i dirve the truck and its a spitting and sputtering like its getting to much fuel or not enough spark. i un hook the a/f ratio gauge and it started running fine again??
i hooked it to the ground, then poweer, and then the purple wire on the drivers side o2 sensor?? so what am i doing wrong? or is the gauge broken??
thansk for the help. larry

I had the same sputtering problem that the A/F guage in my TA. Car ran fine before the install, then 2 days later after hooking up that guage it starting sputtering like a bad miss and wanted to shut off. Took the guage off and everything was fine. I read somewhere on Tech that the guage would screw up the PCM's 02 reading and make the car dump mad fuel. I cant remember where it was but its been about 5 years ago lol.. needless to say, I havent run the guage since and the car is fine. It was the same issue you had with your's.

not familiar with hooking an a/f gauge to a narrowband sensor, but it sounds like you are screwing up what the PCM is seeing for voltage from the sensor itself. Like you got inbetween the signal and now the pcm thinks it is super rich and it's pulling all the fuel or vice a versa.

Post up the schematic from the directions.

well i dont have the directions.
thats why i called autometer. they said red is to a keyed 12 volt source. black is ground and the purple wire goes to the purple wire hooked to the o2 sensor???

i dont know what the heck the thing is doing. lol

Linky to installation file of a Oxygen Sensor Kit 2244 <--pdf file

I haven't read it yet, but I'd start there, go through it and make sure you have cover your bases well. You only tapped into the violet wire on the o2? Again, i haven't read the instructions yet.

I bet you are tapping into the sensor more than just the purple wire. If you have just the gauge, only tap into the lamdba(signal) wire of the sensor, keep the gauge positive negative, and lamp seperate from the sensor. TAP, don't cut the purple wire and twist them all together, it will be a nasty reference. If you did, sodler the connection.
