I have USAA auto insurance and when I last spoke with them I informed them that I had done some major modifications to the truck and wanted my insurance to cover my new mods. I was expecting them to send a inspector to visually identify the mods and quote a new policy and raise my rates. All they said was..OK. Nothing more. I'm confused by that.
I remember HOLTY saying when he got his truck smashed up he had the upgraded (premium??) insurance that insured his truck above the stock value and insured any additional mods done to his truck. I'm assuming he had to pay more for this type of insurance.
All my insurance company said was there was no need for a list of mods or inspection by a inspector as long as I kept any and all receits on mods that I have spent on the truck. My insurance rates have not gone up either.
I asked them to make a note in my file saying I had called and informed them of mods done to my truck, to cover my *** in case they say I never called about it.
Is this all there is too it?

They are the best. I have a bank account but don't use it, though i'm tempted to start using it as my primary.I've had no problems with them ever but I'm still a little shocked they would just say..."sure bud, whatever you want and we'll cover it with no extra fee."

I believed them at the time because last summer some jackasses broke into my truck at night when it was parked outside my house and stole my aftermarket indash TV/DVD. I told usaa and they asked if I had a receit of my aftermarket products and I faxed them the receit as well as one for my window tint and they covered it in full minus my deductible. They even payed for upgrading to a newer indash TV model!

Julien, what you posted sounds almost the same as what i did, only i took it one step further. The good thing about Allstate is that i have a local agent that i deal with, not a 800 number and get just anybody. My agent and i know each other on a first name basis and when i need things done, i go directly to her office. She told me nothing was needed to cover all the mods i did but she said that it would not hurt for her to have pictures and copies of reciepts on file. So i got copies of all my mod reciepts and took pictures of my truck and gave them to her and she put them in my file folder. HOWEVER, she did make a change to my policy somehow there was a place in her computer system where she listed all my mods and the price of each. Then took the value of my truck and added all the mods up and thats how we determined the value of my truck. It came out to be approx $67k. It raised my yearly premium about $100. As you know, it was a good thing we did this because after my accident, my insurance adjuster showed up at the shop with that computer printout in his hand that my insurance agent typed up with all my mods and there value of each. THAT is what got me covered. Without that, there is no doubt in my mind that i would have my truck totaled and would have had to buy it back off the insurance company to pull all my mods off. With all that said, if i were you and you are like me and need that feeling of being covered, you HAVE to get them to put something in there computers in your policy saying your truck is worth $X amount of money. If not, i feel certain you will be screwed if something does happen.
BUT, there was/is a down side to me having all this extra coverage on my truck. Because of such a high value there was no way in hell the insurance company was going to total my truck and give me $67k. Lets say my truck was so jacked up and i did not want it any longer and just wanted them to total it and get something else, that could never happen now. Had my truck rolled over and the cab needed replaced or something like that I probably would not have gone through the frame AND cab swap. That would have just been too much for me to handle but i would have been screwed because i would have had to since they would not total it.

Hey guys,
You SERIOUSLY want to look into this.
Holty, I've had the same allstate agent since 1992 and know him quite well also. It sounds like you have a stated value policy and it was cheaper to repair your vehicle. Just out of curiosity, how much was the total damage to your truck? Was it less than the book value (mine is currently 24k with 17k miles)?
Not trying to freak you out, but what your agent told you is EXACTLY what mine told me. The other day I got him to admit that the 67k value will first get deprecated, then compared to the book value and the repair cost to see which is lower. I asked him point blank: "What would I get if the truck were stolen?" He said "Well, probably close to book value -- maybe a little extra for the mods, but they wouldn't give you the replacement cost on those, they'd calculate depreciation." Anyone want to guess what depreciation on high performance parts is?

Erik, i see what you're saying and agree that your probably right, but so far the insurance company has paid out over $21k to me and i still have one more suppliment coming from them sometime this week. There is atleast another $3k they still owe me on this suppliment. Maybe i do have only a stated value policy, and if my truck was stolen i agree i probably would not get the full $67k, but so far they have paid me every penny i've asked for with this rebuild.

From what I've seen so far, they have been pretty good to deal with. I think the only real stumbling block was the frame, and they eventually came around on that, too. I might have to look into a policy like that, too.
