Default Any roofers/anyone with roofing knowledge here?!?!

As some of you have seen in one of my signature pictures, I am indeed a Scout. I am working on getting Eagle and have everything done but my project. It has to be for the benefit of a non-profit organization yada yada yada.

Long story short, I turn 18 in February, and have to have this done by then. I need to go before the board with project plans in 4 weeks. Basically, the project I have found and come up with is redoing a roof on a pavilion at a CampFire USA camp. By redoing the roof I mean completely tearing down the pavilion except for the vertical support beams.

Dimensions are roughly 16' by 16'. Roof will not have a crest, one side is higher than the other.

If there are any roofers here, or anyone with roofing experience/knowledge, I would really appreciate input on materials and plans!!

PM me or post here if you have any questions.

I am a roofing contractor. That should be cake, a great "first" roof for you to do. What type of roof are you looking at? Shingle, Metal, Rubber? If you are on a tight budget you could ask some local farmers if they have any old metal roofing materials. Around here everybody with a barn has a couple panels, I would donate mine to the scouts if asked. Are you just wanting to rebuild it the same? Good luck, fill in some details and we will try to point you in the right direction.

Planning to replace all wood except for the 4x4 posts. Undecided on whether to do a corrugated metal roof, or a shingle roof still. I know a metal roof will probably me more expensive, put will last longer, look better if done properly, and is lighter weight.

Thinking about doing the frame from 2x6s with joists every 18 inches.

Good luck on your roof build. Once you get your plans in order, I suggest you go to a local sheet metal guy and ask for a donation. Put his name on a plaque or something....just a thought.

Good choice on using metal. If your columns are in good shape, I'd keep them and redo everything else. Redo all the 2x6 rafters and do a better job with spacing. Odd spacing like what is there looks like crap. 24" o.c. is what you need to shoot for. If you're using PT wood, be sure to use galvanized or stainless hardware. I've pulled 16d common nails out of PT wood that was only a year old and they were falling apart already.

18" is an odd spacing to work with. I'd stay with 16"oc or 24"oc.
