what rearend is under a 96 Z71?

I have a friend who blew a spider gear out in his rearend lastnight. What rearend is under these trucks??
Sorry, the truck is actually a 98 Z71 if that makes any difference.
I poured thru the search of the forums and there seems to be conflicting information about the axle spline counts. Some say 28 spline others say 30 spline. I really need to know which it is if anyone can help.
Also, if anyone has a spider gear laying around and would get rid of it I would appreciate it, the one that broke in half was the top spider.
OK, update, this is what I found out when we tore into the rearend tonight. The shafts are 35 spline, it has a 10 bolt cover, and the ring gear is a 9 1/2" what is this thing and does anyone happen to have a set of spider gears for this thing??

It for sure has 10 bolts on the cover so I assume it is a 10 bolt, what I do need to know if it should be a 28 spline 8.5" 10 bolt and if a mini-spool from summit's or Jeg's for a 8.5" 10 bolt will work in his rearend.

yep those have 28 spline shafts. What is the truck used for where you want a mini spool. You know they are not suited well for pavement it reuses the weak stock diff case. a tru trac or eaton or something similar is better for road use or full spool for anything abusive. Just my .02 cents

The truck isn't a 96 like I thought it was, his truck is actually a 98 Z71.
This kid dosen't have the money to buy a good locker or posi unit and he would rather buy a mini-spool than weld the spiders up.
He uses the truck as a daily driver and I told him that the mini-spool isn't really recommended for the street but for right now until he can get some money saved this would be the cheapest and fastest way to get him back on the road again.

Powertrax makes an affordable version called a lock right, i think they are around 200 or so and work the same as the expensive version. They replace your spiders just like a mini spool except it locks and unlocks. I definitely would not recommend a mini spool for a daily driver. It probably wont last too long, either will his patience driving it! But i know how it feels to be broke and broken down, it sucks big time.

well he'll tell you next week that he broke one of his axle shafts.there's no reason to replace the spider gears with something that will break MORE hard parts.shoulda stuck with the open diff....
