Exclamation Need advice for "Welding Rear End?"

So yesterday I was drinking with some buddies. i was talking about how I finally ordered my gears for my blazer after breaking the stock 3.08"s. One of my buddies said he once broke his ring teeth on his jeep and he just welded the ring and pinion. He recommened that I could do the same until i save up to get the gears for the front axle. Is it possible to "Weld the ring Gear" and It will be a Posi? WTF? Or did my buddy have to much to drink? Thanks

He was drinking too much... the only welding you can do inside the centersection is the spider gears inside the differential which works like a spool and gives equal power to both wheels. This isn't a good idea for offroad vehicles due to the amount of twist and lateral force they see and the heavier tires usually involved.

Yeah I didn't think it was a good idea! Thanks for the info. I don't know much about rear ends.

Theres nothing really wrong with welding the rear, if done right it will be very very strong, but as cheyenne383 said you dont weld the ring and pinion only the spiders

So even if i did weld the spiders I would still need to replace the ring and pinion right? since I broke the teeth off those. So in other words welding the spiders just makes it like a spool by locking up both tires?

yea, you have it... the spider gears are now locked together by a weld.. So only way one tire is goin to spin with out the other is, if you broke an axle, broke the spider gear or something worse.

My brother welded the spider gears in the front of his 77 Chevy. 3k rpm dump in 4L kinda killed it. broke the spider gears in half where the welds were..

I have seen plenty of welded rearends hold up. Even a camaro run a 7.3 pass in the 1/8th with slicks and welded spiders. Its all in who welds it, if they know what they are doing, and how much of the gears they actually weld. I wouldn't be affraid to do it unless it was a daily driver, it just sucks in parking lots and stuff when your turning but then again my detroit locker is a pain in the butt sometimes too.
