Default He Finally Broke It....Fixing AP2002's truck

Well I get a call from AP saying his rear axle is making funny noises. It just so happened that I had a diff install in Alvin so after that I went by his place. I already know what to expect and sure enough, I saw this:

That is from 4-5 years of a full size truck and a heavy right foot.

So I put in another set of Yukon 4.10 gears and set them up as tight as I could get them and still be within spec.

For this truck, the install specs are as follows:

Backlash: 0.006"-0.010"
Pinion Bearing Preload: 14-19 in.lbs.

Here is what I got:

Pinion Depth: 0.035"
Backlash: 0.007" (0.230" driverside shim & 0.240 passenger side shim using a detroit tru-track)

Pinion Bearing Preload: 20 in.lbs. (subtract 3 in.lbs. for the pinion seal and net drag is 17 in.lbs.)

Final Product (the centered root-to-crown tooth pattern shows correct pinion depth):

Do you think that would have happened with AAMs?

doesnt matter honestly. over time everything will break if its abused, or just used hard. Axis installed the tru-trac in my truk and re-setup the stock 3.73's a little on the tight side, still no pinion noise, or gear whine. He does great work. I usually do them myself but I was rushed for time and he was available. Glad to see ya rolling again AP!!

Looks good, I usually like a little more pinion preload tho. Pattern looks perfect.

thanks for posting up brian, im just happy it wasnt the tru-trac itself..... i guess it was due for it, it sure had 200-300 passes at the track and some very abusive acceleration on the street everytime i drove it, so 4-5yrs was really pushing it! lol... im just happy its fixed and ready to roll again, i did drive it to work last night since i got called out again and it drove nice with NO NOISE! cant wait to after the break in to start playing with it again..

once again, thanks for going out of your way to help me out...
