the camaro is getting a new motor.
Well I was driving through down town last night on a date, and the car started misfiring. I pulled over and popped the Hood. The drivers side cat was glowing red. I had it towed to the dealership. They just called and said it broke a valve spring and dropped a valve. They are more than likely going to put in a whole new motor.
I was only going 40 MPH when it happened. Thank God I haven't voided the warranty yet!

Wow that sucks! I remember when my buddys turbo civic dropped a valve into no.1 cyl at WOT. We found the broken valve head stamped into the piston lol. Glad to hear that warranty is taking care of it

I'm f'n pissed. The tech line is telling the dealer to just replace the one piston and rebuild the head. I spent over an hour arguing with them about it. This is horse ****. You can't tell me that it will be the same after that. Who the hell pulls a motor apart to replace one piston. Any techs on here have suggestions.

The piston barely has a mark in it, and honestly would be just fine as it is. There's no need to replace the motor, the only thing that was damaged was the lifter, valve, and spring.
This is how every warranty claim has been done for awhile. A cost comparison is done on repairing vs. replacing the motor. GM doesn't give an exact percentage as to when it is recommended to replace it, but it's in the 70% range.
We've put pistons/rods in 4.8/5.3/6.0/6.2/7.0's since day one with no problems. You'll never know the difference. Besides, the warranty doesn't expire till 100k. And what won't be the same? This isn't a shade tree shop, we aren't going to straighten the valves with a hammer.
And to be straight honest with you, it's probably better off repairing it. The replacement motors GM has aren't built with the same standards as the factory ones. And as many as I have seen fail here lately, I'm not a believer in them.
