Then how do downfire boxes work? As long as you clear the xmax of your sub your fine. Subs always play distortion too

just sayin if you only have 1/16" between the subs xmax and the floor, yeah your subs not going to hit the floor but it will most likely not sound good because the sound waves dont have enough space to produce.....at least i know in my truck that the downfireing box didnt sound nearly as good as when the subs were faceing up....just my personal experience....

Sounds more like cancellation issues. Put on a pair of good quality head phones and play bass freqs. Speaks are millimeters from your ear and you can hear them just fine. Same with bookshelf speakers. You can still hear the bass when your head is sitting on the grill.
My guess is imaging/cancellation issues.

talkin about much smaller speakers in headphones and such and therefore they dont produce near as big of sound waves as a 12" sub. the bigger the sound wave the more room it needs to reach its potential, just like waves on a beach.....the smaller waves dont need near as long to reach there potential as the bigger waves do.

i believe he said the SSD's. I need him to get those dam things in too so i can justify spending a lot more money than i had planned and get the Fi's also haha. by the way, if i don't go Fi's, what should i go with for some nice SPL with reasonable SQ? Dayton HO's, AA Assasins, Orion HP's, Mach5 Maw's? whatever i get im going to attempt 12's but i might have to settle for 10's

daytons would be good, havent ever heard of AA Assasins, if i got an orion i think i would go with an H2 but i dont think you have room, and i have not heard anything on Mach5 Maw's.....if you are goin for spl you will want 12's, if you go 10's you really need 4 decent 10's to get some good spl.....although 10's would probably a little better in the SQ department.....

Thomas...do an experiment for me. Stick your ear 2" away from a 12" woofer and tell me if you can hear it.
And size of speaker has nothing to do with this issue. They all play frequencies, and every sub/speaker plays the same frequency alike. It may sound different, be louder, but it is the same frequency.
I went with 12" Fi SSD's with copper coils. Would have liked to put in two 12" BTL's but couldn't find a 4000 watt amp in my price range.

yeah you can hear it, but how much louder is it from 10ft. away? thats my point. the sound waves are produced at the speaker but it gets louder and louder to a certain point as they develpe outward, if the sound waves hit the floor and have no where to go they wont be able to get as loud as they would if they had more room to move outward. therefore in my experience, a sub 6" away from the floor is not as loud as that same sub with the same amp in the same box faced up where it has the whole cab of the truck to reproduce its sound.....
