Default in car computer/alternitive?

My truck has a Pioneer DEH80MP (I think thats the numbers...anyways). It has a USB input that I have been connecting my iPod to. But after having 2 iPods dies due to leaving them in the car (I was using them as a hard disk/music storage for only in truck use), I need something else to store music on.

Today I tried to use a USB flash drive, but the head unit will not read sub-directory folders (folders within folders), which prevents me from categorizing the music (all 5000 songs).

What options do I have along the lines of an in dash "computer" or other media system?

Curious why your ipods died? I leave my touch in the car and truck all the time, solid state memory and no issues. I'd think that getting a new ipod or a different deck that can read subfolders (I'm pretty sure the DNX7140 I have will) would be cheaper than building a car computer.

sometimes the ipod wouldn't turn off when I turned off the ignition. This would let the battery run dead. After numerous times of this happening, the batteries get trashed. Last time it happened, something went on the main board as well (had it checked out). Instead of spending $100+ on an ipod that I don't "need", I would rather put the money towards something cooler. I would rather have a touch screen, interactive system since the cataloging through the head unit was never very user friendly even with the ipod connection.

Ahh gotcha. Like I said, I have the Kenwood DNX7140 and it's been fantastic so far. Love it. What's your budget?

I think I spent about $1300 total for the head unit with nav, iPod cable, XM interface, and backup camera.

are you using your ipod like I was, or does your "head unit" have a dedicated hdd that you can load your music to?

Like you are, it plays directly off of the iPod.
