Yeah definitely not fun, hopefully it will be worth it when it's all done though.
At the advice of a few different people on different forums, I decided to skip the plasti dip and went down and bought a HVLP spray gun set and some epoxy primer this morning. The plan now is to epoxy prime each panel as I prep it to seal/protect it, then when I'm ready to actually paint, do a urethane surfacer over the epoxy, then base and clear.

Left bedside is done, turned out pretty good I think! I'm not going to mind driving this thing around in primer either, doesn't look half bad. In the right light some of the feathered areas show, but I think the urethane surfacer primer will take care of those.
How long should I wait before I start putting this side of the truck back together?

Tailgate and fuel door are ready to spray, I'm going to try to get the other bedside prepped and sprayed tomorrow too. I don't think it was in as bad of shape as the driver side.

For the base and clear, whenever I get to that point, I've pretty well decided I'm going to need to rent some paint booth time...garage is a little dirty, and I can see a few small spots where either some kind of fiber or dust got into the primer. Not a big deal now, but I don't want that crap in the final coats.

Good call on the epoxy primer instead of pd! You will want to use a fill-and-sand primer (wet sand that) to fill all of the small imperfections... followed by a sealer prior to color/clear. Painting your own car or truck is extremely rewarding in my opinion
