Rear drag radial/slick tucked max width

Default Rear drag radial/slick tucked max width

OK, so I've looked all over the place here and have an idea on a back-spacing to run but have yet to see a tire completely tucked in and no one mentions any fender rolling/trimming req'd.

So I've seen that with a stock rear axle width most run around 6-7/8", 7", and even up to 7.5" back spacing for tires ranging form a 275 to 315.

To get deeper into the trenches of exactly what I'm after on a 15x10 rim and tire options:

Drag strip
MT ET Drag 30.x9.0 (O.D. 29.3 - Section width 11.4)

Street tire
MT ET Street S/S 295/65R15 (O.D. 30.3 - Section width 12.0)
MT ET Street R 275/60R15 (O.D. 28.2 - Section width 11.1)

As you can see I'm wanting to stay around 30" tall tire to fall within where I believe I'll be at based on gearing/RPM/trap speed.

So based on the above is there a snow ***** chance in hell to tuck a 12.0” wide tire with a leaf spring setup (no grinding on leaf either)? Or is rolling an absolute necessity?

You did not mention suspension setup. Leaf springs, outside frame link, inside frame link, etc... Tire construction will also factor into the mix due to side wall bulge.

Here is mine on 295/65/15 Hoosier DR and 15x10 Racestars with 6-5/8 BS. Just going off recollection, could go another 5/8" in (7-1/4 BS) before having leaf spring contact and would allow the tire to fully tuck.

@BigKID You must have skipped the last sentence!

Yep saw both of those which is why I mentioned 7.5 BS (terravast4), Vortec350ss ground his leaf and stretched the bedside to fit the 315's (also 7.5" BS as I talked with him a few years back), another good thread is user ironcityboom (whistle pig build thread - 6-7/8 BS), I've scoured the "lets see your drag setup" thread. What is really never discussed if the tires are within the bedside or not as pictures can be deceiving. Good example is your pic does not look like it's tucked in and would need fender lip rolled.

As shakenfake said, leaf spring setup.

Everything I listed tire construction wise I believe is a stiff sidewall construction.

Unfortunately my bed is buried in one of my storage units as I had the frame PC'd over the winter or this conversation probably wouldn't be necessary I could just measure from the leaf to fender lip.

I am running the ET Street R 295 65/15. On a stock axle. 15x10 rim with 7.5 backspace. They will not fully tuck inside the fender but I can get a good inch or so up there. Tire bulge is what gets you and a 295 street tire has a totally different profile than a ET street. My first few drives I did experience slight rubbing on the “bulge” of the sidewall until I stiffened up the shocks. I think if I had gotten a 275 I may have gotten them to tuck better so I could lower the rear a bit more. Oh, I did trim about 1/2 of the fender lip as well

I believe I read you were about 1/4” clearance from the leaf spring with your setup correct? I went back and found a slightly smaller diameter/width ET Drag that I noted in 1st post that I’d think should fit well. The ET Street S/S is just slightly narrower than your Street R in the same size according to MT, nothing to really write home about. And for street driving I’m really not opposed to the 275 as I’m not going to be doing anything that necessitates needing the taller tire for trap MPH (pretty sure I’m past that phase… I think). Really appreciate the help here as it will allow me to get this axle narrowing under way.
