Yeah I'm in the same boat as you are. Never done it before but really want to learn how. If I do it right then I can do my doorhandles and tailgate handle.

To take off the lower valance just pop the anchor rivits with a flat head screw driver than from the top pull out with needle nose plyers to paint, if its textured don't worry about sanding, thers a paint adhesive to help it adhear to the paint but I don't remember whats it's called use that than prime it lay it on thick than sand it down with 400 grit till smooth than paint to the color you want, only do this next step if your doing this for show you than sand the paint with 2000 grit than 3000 than use a fine cut compound to gloss shine and than shoot with clear coat to protect the paint 2 or 3 coats should be fine...as for door and tailgate handles you can do the same. If not for show, just prime paint clearcoat and your done.

sand the thing down almost smooth then put some primer on it. sand the primer with 320 till its smooth, spray sealer on it, then 2-3 coats of base, then 2 coats of clear. if your good you dont have to sand it down and buff it. it looks way better smooth than with the texture in it. thats just my opinion.
