I called the dealership and they haven't even got any yet. I will call a bigger one.

There's a guy that makes the old-fashioned straps out of stainless, I believe his business is called VR straps. I bought a set and believe me, you'll never break them! I didn't want to wait on GM to bring out the new stainless cables. I'll get the replacements when they are out and keep them in reserve to put on when I decide to sell the Avy.

Let me clarify here - these are NOT cables like stock, these are metal straps like trucks had in the 70's. There is no way these straps will break, you would pull the studs out of the tailgate before the straps broke. For $50, my peace of mind is worth it.

Does anyone have a copy or a link of the service bulletin on this? I'm afraid that my local dealer won't just hand me a set because I ask for them. My truck is a 2000, so am I pushing it by asking them to replace them or will they do it?

Dealers in this area (Pensacola) say that we will get a notice from Chevrolet when to actually bring the trucks to the dealer for the straps.....which sounds a lot like what they said to do when I bitched about piston slap back in 2001 on my then-new truck.

Piston slap sucks big time, but doesn't typically injure people. I guarantee you someone has gotten hurt because of broken tailgate straps. One of mine broke while I had four kids sitting on it. Scared the hell outta me. I bet GM comes through on this one as there is too much at stake.

I would take it back to the dealer and say that I would like new straps put in. Tell him you need to stand on the tailgate or move a refrigerator or something. They should put in new carbon steel straps to hold you over until the sst ones come out. I took my '02 to a small dealer and they replaced them in about 10 minutes.

Just be careful. It was also at that time that I spotted the truck I'm in now. I guess you can say the broken strap I had cost me over $20 grand.
