Aftermarket brakes????

Reason:
Since the rotors are drilled or slotted, there is less material to perform the same job as stock rotors. Therefore the rotors have the same amount of heat produced, but less material to absorb in return they get hotter. Only reason they actually perform better is because of bigger rotor size and more aggressive lining material. If this is true, then if why pay a lot more for drilled or slotted rotors? Why not just buy bigger rotors for a cheaper price?
So in personal opinions does anyone agree with my instructors?

nothing more than "good looks" ?? man you have to be kidding me. Your in a class and they are saying that? I would goto whatever school your at and tellt hem you want to transfer to another class, thouse ****'s dont know what they are talking about. I think this graphic from Baer speaks for itself.

By adding a larger rotor and caliper, you effectively increase brake torque. How are you doing this? By increasing the effective caliper piston area and the rotor effective radius
But the real reason to get a big brake kit is to combat heat. You want the disc to absorb more heat and get it away from the pad.
However, the best upgrade you can do to your braking system is to upgrade your tires. Nothing is better then that mod alone. Well that and slowing down.

One more thing... Your teacher is partly right. But the topic cannot be generalized. It's a specific thing and each portion of the braking system needs to be analyzed.
For example, I could upgrade to a BBK (big brake kit) and stay with Goodyear GTII's.
Or put on some sticky tires like race slicks and use the stock hardware. I''m willing to bet that the later setup will brake better in terms of 60-0.
However in back to back tests, the BBK setup will outlast the stock brakes w/ race slicks as the stock setup will begin to fade due to heat.

See I always was under the assumption that a BBK was better than stock as far as dissipation of heat and overall brake performance. There was 2 other instructor's I talked to who disagreed with my instructor. Also about all of the school. I just wanted to get some other opinions before i actually made my opinion I just have to buy a set, put em on and make my own decision. thanks a lot guys

I always thought that the slots in the rotor are better because air is able to reach the inside of the rotor and help dissipate the heat. If you think about it which will cool better a 2 inch thick steel plate or a 1 inch. I know this example is crude but you get the point. Just my 2 cents!

well my brakes are the Eradispeed +1's made by Baer... they are Alot more than just 'good looks'...... my braking distance decresed Dramatically with this upgrade.
.. do ahead and tell your brake techer that I told him to shove it! This is the best upgrade I have done to my truck(until I install the STS kit)

There has been a lot of discussion about drilled vs. slotted vs. plain brakes. You can read them here
https://ls1tech.com/forums/showthrea...ghlight=brakes
The way I see it, the heating issue really only applies to hardcore road racing, where repeated heavy braking is an issue. If you like the look of drilled and slotted on your truck, then go for it. I have the Baer AlumaSports on my truck and love them.
