The inside of the pan? Not for looks but so sludge/deposits don't have anything to stick to and build up on. Even with regular oil changes deposits start to build up. I had already smoothed what portions I could of it.

The etching doesn't really alter the surface it just preps it for coating. If you look closely you can see the original shot peen marks.

Etched and coated the cam today...tomorrow I'll burnish it with the 0000 steel wool and next week after it's fully cured I'll buff/polish the coating.

I am really curious to see if all this polishing and coating works out well, or if you trash a $10,000 motor because you had too much free time on your hands
