Wife and I got the trans out from under the truck. Where the frame rail angles up at the front allowed me to easily clear the bellhousing without lifting the truck as high as I thought I’d have to. Now my worry is getting the new transmission up onto the jack after I slide transmission under the truck. I used some foot long pieces of 2x4 as a ramp to slide the transmission off the jack. Sliding it up is another story though.

Stinking rear stator bushing is way tight. Ordered a couple more kits to see if any others will fit with less sanding involved. The OEM aluminum rear stator bushing was tight as well. All of the videos I watched of disassembly showed easy removal of the bellhousing/pump assembly. I had to pull really hard to separate mine. I hope that one of the new ones will fit freely. All other bushings I replaced are fine and not tight at all.

Edit: After looking at some more pictures of the rear stator bushing I might have drove it down a little too far in the bore.

Got a Circle D triple disc 1800-2000 stall convertor. If I ever do a cam it’ll only be a little baby one anyways. Plan to drive the truck into the ground or take the top of my head off in another wreck with it.

New stator bushing finally came in so good to go there. I have zero end play on the input shaft though. I’m suspecting the new thicker coated metal stator gasket. The coated metal one is 0.030” thick and the OEM paper gasket is 0.008” thick. I’m thinking the thicker gasket is making the stator sit taller and eating up my endplay. I can rotate the assembly by hand albeit with some effort. I believe the effort is due to the ample assembly grease I used. I may take it all back apart and wipe the grease off and see how easily it spins. The grease might be eating up some endplay as well…??

Edit: put the dial indicator on and got 0.0025 so very tight vs the recommended 0.006-0.004”. That was with me really putting in some effort to make the needle swing. I’ll check the old trans tomorrow but I can already tell it is a much looser endplay.

Edit 2: I put the dial indicator on the old transmission and got a 0.006” endplay reading.

I slid the transmission back under the truck on some cardboard. To get the transmission back up onto the trans jack under the truck I would rock it forward and my wife would slide some scrap wood under it then repeat by rocking it backwards. Once I got it raised to the level of the trans jack plate I just slide it over onto the jack. Worked like a charm. Getting it to bolt back up was nowhere near as difficult as removing it. The deep well 15mm socket on the end of 18” extension and u-joint just drooped. I put a couple of wraps of electrical tape around the u-joint which held it enough so that I could reach the top most bolts and still have the flex I needed to remove/install.

After taking the old transmission apart I’m beginning to think that the torque convertor is what ate itself. The pump surfaces look better in the old 115K mile transmission than the new one does. Clutch packs look decent and aren’t glazed or anything crazy. 1-2-3-4 piston isn’t cracked. Bushings look pretty decent as well. Just a few more things to button up and I should be back on the road.

The 6L80 is pretty well known to eat up converters

If your old trans is good still, freshen it up and keep it on the shelf for when this happens again 😇

Yea, I’ve blown thru 2 converters in 2 years and am about to have the 3rd installed. Do not remove lockup in 3rd and 4th or you will have the same results. The 6l80 needs lock up, I fried an FTI converter bc of no lockup until 6th.

Thrashed on the truck hardcore today and got it wrapped up. Only had one leak and it’s because I forgot to put the inlet/outlet o-rings back on the hard lines where they go into the bypass block. Tomorrow I’ll test drive it some more to make sure I’ve solved any issues before it gets tuned for the new convertor and transgo tow & pro shift kit. Fingers crossed it’s all good because it’s gonna get way too cold to be working outside over the next week. That side of my house is a wind tunnel too. Open fields to the front and back for over a mile.
