Cool picture, but that piston looked like it blew from the crown down, like detonation might do. If it did blow from the ring lands the piston crown would of been sheered up, no down like it is now. Same with the compression ring.
You could probably do that kind of damage, with the metal all being melted in that direction with a acetylene torch burning from the top of the piston, that's what leads be to think it was detonation, than the piston cracked and left a massive hole in it, and then whoever was driving that motor didn't stop soon enough and there was a couple power strokes where the gasses were shooting through there like a geyser of fire.

But I'm no piston engineer by any means so I could be way off. Cool *** pic though!!

Brings up a good discussion though. Im not an expert, and always like to learn something new. Im interested to see what LME has to say about it.

Got the engine pulled today. 7 looks like it got hot, but there doesnt appear to be any damage....crankcase pressure must have been unreal because there was a pretty good amount of oil sitting in the passenger side cylinders on top of the pistons when I took the head off.

Pass side head is pretty toasty above #8, not really worried about it though, they are stock 317s with dual springs and rev valves.

if you run those L92/LS3 heads, i vote run a LS9 head gaskets (7 layers vs 3) better run a bigger split cam too or you'r gonna be like me...leaving HP on the table.
