No I don't want to cut the spring in half, I am considering cutting the very top and very bottom ring off. Just the ring that located the spring. The top would be welded to the top of my cups, and the bottom I would mount a plate with a bolt in the center to locate the bottom of the bag.

No compressible part of the spring would be in play. The factory springs have a perfect circle on top and bottom unlike many springs that the first coil ofset and part of the spring rate.

The stack would be
Donut(top ring of spring)
cup
bag
plate
donut(bottome ring of spring)

 

 

Like I said you want to cut the spring... No dude, you can not do it that way, well let me say that you can do it however you want, BUT IT WILL NOT WORK, def not the way to do it.. Just make it so the spring sets in the cup, bolt the cup to the old area where you removed stuff...

 

Bolts are too costly. Use wire and duct tape.

Why not just buy lowering springs for the rear..Seems your doing all this to save some coin when infact its gonna cost you more money in the long run. And please scrap your spring cutting idea. That is a hack job for sure..To bad your not in Houston, I'd gladly build you a set of upper and lower cups.

Explain to me why welding a ring of steel to a tube a steel of nearly the same diameter won't work. I am sure if I found 3/4 solid bar and made four rings no one would flinch. But re-purposing an old ring is not going to work.

I could understand if the rings were pitched and not level but they are perfect rings.

I don't want lowering springs because I haul a few different trailers and I want the truck to always be level. Also I want to improve the ride, not stiffen it up with drop coils.
