Default 4x4 T56 build *COMPLETED*

Figured I would share some progress on my 4x4 T56 build...

This uses the C5 rear housing. Reading MikeTPI's 1000hp on stock parts guide, it appears one could use the 2005-2006 C6 Z06 extension housing and get the 1pc countershaft assembly. GM changed the adapter pattern to match that of the 6L80E or whatever the automatic is that they used so my adapter piece that is already built would not transfer over. Not really planning on any hardcore 4th to 5th WFO runs anyway but if it breaks I atleast have an upgrade path

On with the build...

Started with 04 GTO trans with 60K

I had some honkin' plate laying around since we are scrapping a bunch of stuff. The C5 vette rear adapter was sourced from ebay for $50. The heart of the setup is the piece that bolts to the C5 housing, I started with a 6.010" hole .400 deep and test fit from there. Once it fit snug I used M10x1.5 transfer screws to transfer the holes from the C5 adapter to the steel. The old dowel pins were converted to bolt holes and transferred using a transfer punch. I had to sacrifice one and cut it down to fit. Cutting this piece out turned out being a major pain in the ***, my plasma cutter only does 5/8 rough cut and this piece is over 1", I ended up milling a track all the way around the piece and then using a combination of the plasma and a conventional oxy acetylene torch. The heat ended up warping the plate a little bit and I had to clearance the adapter once again.

Still need more parts, stay tuned

Looks like a good start. What all do you need to finish it?

Just ordered most of the parts, the front shift is on back order so thegearbox is going to call me when they get more in. Decided to get a couple more goodies instead of just a shim and snap ring kit. Went ahead and ordered brass pads, steel 3-4 fork, steel 5-6 and billet keys for 3-4 and 5-6.

Going to run it with that, if I encounter breakage issues it will be swapped to 1pc counter, 05-06 z06 tail, SSR main shaft, that cts-v 1st gear, and the updated snap ring setup. 32 spline input for the NVG149 is available too.

very interesting, I was plan on doing this myself but didnt think into this deep, I was simply going to run a divorced transfer case with a transfer case crossmember and a short shaft between the transmission and transfer case, I really like your plan though!

Really cool project, Im interested in seeing how it works out. Im wondering how its going to last with the heavy weight and traction.

I am too. Going to reshim everything to .003 preload since I have it apart and hope for the best.

Read some neat things about relocating the reverse lockout too, probably won't wire it but just install a lighter spring.

Ended up building an SSR clone using Mike's guide https://ls1tech.com/forums/manual-tr...ock-parts.html

Since I started with a GTO M12, I picked up SSR 32 spline mainshaft, SSR 3.01:1 1st gear, SSR 2pc 1-2 locking ring and SSR 5th, 6th and reverse gears and other washers etc

1 piece countershaft assembly, just came today

The 5th gear I need to finish the job is out of stock at GM & Tremec and supposed to ship by 6/6 but I can atleast get the case back on and get the preload set.

Looks like the SSR mainshaft VSS snap-ring grooves sit right where my seals reside on my C5 adapter so I picked up speedi-sleeves to fix this, I'll get pics when I get them on. They will be the last thing I install.

Really cool project youve got going, the SSR ratios I think will be really nice with a heavy truck. With a little shorter than stock tire, that gear ratio and the 4.10s ought to be pretty decent.
