Default noob from NW indiana

Hey guys. I currently drive a 2001 Silverado 1500, but I'm looking for a Suburban project. I'm going to look at a 2007 this weekend that I'm really excited about. It has the 5.3 FlexFuel with cylinder deactivation. Has anyone built one of these? Is that cylinder deactivation going to get in the way of smoking people at stop lights? I want to put on a full exhaust with LT's, a cam, and upgrade the top end a bit.

Long term plans include boost, manual trans, and a beefier rear end if necessary.

Welcome, I think you are talking about the DOD system when you say cylinder deactivation. Yes they do make kits for them, GM Performance has the kit and you can even pick them up at the Chevy dealership. My buddy built a 08 Tahoe and it had DOD in it and he did the delete kit (worked like a charm and didn't take long at all) , and put a Yank converter and a cam in it with a black bear tune. He also has a pro-charger sitting at home waiting to go in it as well. The Tahoe wasn't his first choice in upgrading but one night a guy ran him off the road and totaled his truck. He woke up in a ditch and the guy was gone so he was out a truck. Long story short he had the Tahoe as a Daily driver that his wife drove and decided to put the project into that. Before the cam he was running mid 16s in Cali and now he is running 15.3s in the quarter I think. He doesn't like the Tahoe and would of rather messed around with his silverado. Just thought I would share this real life story with you. Upgrade your truck and leave the suburban for your wife to get the kids in. Hope to see you around on here.

Thanks for the input. I thought about modding the pickup, but it's just not in good enough shape for me to justify putting money in it. The chassis has corrosion EVERYWHERE, the body is rusting, and I don't think the frame is very straight. I'll keep it through the winter to drive while I tear into the burban engine a bit then probably ditch it in the spring.

Welcome to PT.net! I'm in Indy also. Did you have any specific modding questions in regard to the '07 Burb?

How are you fixing it? Having it done at a shop? I kinda want to try my hand at it since it's down low and not too visible. The whole truck has been a sort of experiment for me, seeing what I can do myself and what I like/don't like. Let me know how it goes, and have fun with the new converter.

My dream/plan for the winter is an m6 swap. I've been checking out the threads and I'm getting a good idea of what's involved mechanically, and electronically it sound's like the a4 codes just get wiped out, but I'm still wondering if the traction control junk in my burb will be affected at all or complicate the matter? And a side note, I'm curious how the shifter will work out and what I'm going to do about cupholders...

Mmm that's a little ambitious for my own fabricating skills, although that's definitely the way to go in the long run. I'm just going to sell it though so I don't see putting that much into it.
