Default Wanting a new cam.

I have a 05 gmc Sierra z71. 5.3L HO. The all alluminum block.

I dont post on this sight much because mine is 4wd but since im doing alot more engine modifications.

I am wanting to put more aggresive cam in my truck. Something that has a choppy idle. I would like to keep a stock converter but I am open to changing it.

Currently I have Pacesetter longtubes into true duals and a k&n cold air intake. It is also customed tuned with hp tuner. I can get it tuned again if required but would need a cam I could drive with it until I get it tuned.

I heard a ls1 hot cam is good for these trucks.

This is my ride.

Thanks

comp 206/212 or 212/218 makes good torque down low and can be run with the stock stall

Nice truck!

I had a Comp 212 218 in my 04 Z71 5.3

It ran great with that cam and had a nice lope at idle.

Any part number on that comp cam.

I looked really like the idea of it. Would it need to be retuned, would i have to upgrade, springs or pushrods.

I was also wondering. I have a tune already in my truck for a cold air intake and headers. Will it run find for about a month until i can get it re-tuned.

Two Comp 212/218's come to mind...

the XFI RPM: pn XR265HR = 212/218 .522/.529 114° and the XFI RPM HI LIFT: pn XR265HR = 212/218 .558/.563 115°. I like the high lift version myself. If you search both this section and the GM Engine and Exhaust Performance section for "212/218" you'll find tons of threads and good info about these cams. Tuning and springs are a must, while hardened pushrods are a good idea. For springs, you can use the yellow LS6 springs which are inexpensive from our sponsors such as Texas Speed and SDPC, and Blackbear, Wheatley, Nelson, etc. can handle the tuning for you if that's not your thing.

You can get away with running these cams with the stock converter, but to optimize the set up, I recommend something in the 2600+ neighborhood Circle-D has re-tooled Trailblazer converters that are quickly gaining popularity, and Yank has their TT2600 which has been around a long time. I've driven a truck with a Yank TT3000, and under normal driving conditions it reacted like the stock converter, but when I mashed the go pedal the tach shot right up to 3k like the advertised stall dictates I chose a Circle-D converter to handle my current and future setup (LQ9 in pieces )

I was looking at cam part number 54-412-11. from what i can find nothing is required to install these cams. no new springs, lifters or anything.

I already have a mild tune on my truck.

Is this true. I wont be redlining the truck or anything it's just a dd. Just want something with alittle more bottom end and sounds aggresive.

The stock springs are only good to just under .500 lift, and I'm not sure what kind of seat pressure they have, so replacing the stock springs are a must. The yellow LS6 springs have 90# of closed seat pressure, and will work with the 54-412-11 that you referenced, which is the XR265HR that I've been referring to. (PAC 1218 and Comp 918 springs have 130# closed seat pressure btw). I always like to recommend hardened pushrods also, as the stockers are more prone to bending at higher RPM. Guys have run the stock pushrods without any problems, but I like the extra insurance of a good hardened pushrod.
