Suggestions for big power out o 5.3
#1
Hey guys I'll start off by saying what I want. I want to be around 500 horsepower and I was wondering what it would take to get this out of my 5.3L. I currently have a 2001 GMC Sierra 2wd with a 5.3L Vortec. I've got a cold air intake, throttle body spacer, shorty headers, electric cutouts, rebuilt trans with shift kit and 2500 stall, swapped out my rear end for 4.10 auburn limited slip. I have previously toyed with the idea of a supercharger but thought maybe I could spend about the same amount of money on internal engine parts so it will be more reliable. I have very basic knowledge of the internals of the engine so I have no idea where to begin in achieving my goal. Can anyone throw down some ideas and different combinations that may get me close to the 500 mark. I am trying to decide if I should keep my truck and dump a bunch of $$ into it or sell it and get something brand new that’s already fast. I've got allot into this already but I don't want a 15,000 engine. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks,
Phil

to get 500 n/a out of a 5.3 your gonna need a 15000 engine. or go with a good forged shortblock and a turbo and it should be about there. otherwise bolt on a 200 shot and call it a day.

Boost it and be done with it.

Radix, gt2-3 cam, long tube headers, good exhaust, and a tune, 500+ to the wheels pretty easily, but with stock driveability and mileage as long as you keep your foot out of it.

I would have to disagree with this statement. If you do it smart i have only 2k in my 370 with ported heads, cam etc... and im guessing around 475 horse with the supporting mods i have that you would need to get 500 out of a supercharged 5.3. Just my .02. Not that The Radix is a bad idea, it will get you plenty of power but alot of guys think that an engine swap is big $$$ which its not if you shop around and put the right parts into it. Also you could look into kbracing96 turbo kits he is selling, alot of good words about them, i've been looking pretty closely at them myself!

What concerns me about a turbo or a supercharger is that i'll spend the money to get that done and then the internals of the engine wont be able to handle it. I have heard that superchargers and turbo's are bad for your engine unless you do some major internal upgrades. Same goes for a 200 shot of NOS. If I do decide ot go for a Radix, what is the best model for my application?
