I have heard from somewhere that you have to go with a gear reduction starter for a 383 stroker or high torque starter. Is this true? Need help

You would prolly be OK with a good quality stock starter.

 

What kind of CR are you planning on running? If it's under 12:1-ish then youl'll be fine with a stocker.

 

Stock should be fine. The stock high tq starters have a ~1" copper tube spacer going between the solinoid and the rear of the started case. The spacer is there because the windings in the starter hare longer, thus the spacer is needed. Starters with the hot lug directly off the back of the solenoid are not the high tq.

 

I run a stock starter on my 403 with no problems.

 

Mine kind of lugs a little on start up with ~10.7:1CR but it is also the stock starter with 180K on it.

 

I was asuming he was speaking of a gen 1 sbc 383. Maybe they will clarrify. But the gen3 starters are all pretty stout.

 

I was asuuming he was talking about an older motor as well.

 

The starter in question is going on a 383 stroker for a 1996 GMC Sierra. I don't know the compression ratio yet because I haven't talked it over with my engine builder/machinist. But thanks for all the useful info guys.

 

If it was me i'd just try the stock one and if it didn't work out worry about it then. I feel the stock one will do fine. I have a stock starter with 160k miles on it on my 95 1500 383ci with 10.1:1 compression. It does just fine.
