For what it's worth, the word is that the stock heads flow really well and do not require very much in the way of porting. I may be mistaken about this, but I think that a small of amount of pocket porting by someone who knows their stuff will yield 'some' gain for you...but I'm not sure how much! Just make sure the guy is experienced with these heads and doesn't take too much material off when porting.

Good luck!

Is this a 5.3l engine? I'm doing several sets of 5.3l heads this week. I'll post up some results as soon as I finish collecting the data by this weekend.

Headwork with a new cam can yield a lot of power. The best and most expensive is CNC. If done by hand, it's very tedious work and takes time. They say your no.1 cylinder will be good and no.8 will be "good enough". If heads are iron you need air power, aluminum can be done with an electric dremmel. If you want to save money do it yourself (no one will do as good a job). If you need to pay someone, buy new finished heads you'll be happier. When I port, I just remove the slag and sandcasting finish. I also port match to the intake using the gasket and clean up the combustion area. Don't try to hog the ports bigger, I don't think the gain is worth going through the wall into a water passage or casting bubble. You'll be putting JB Weld everywhere. If money is no object, I like the AFR 100% CNC line for the flow numbers. They also make IMO the best smog legal heads.
