Default new cam?

hey guys, im looking into the Comp Cams Xtreme energy cam for my 83 chevy. Heres some specs

Operating Range: 2300-6500 RPM
Duration Advertised: 284° Intake / 296° Exhaust
Duration @ .050'' Lift: 240° Intake / 246° Exhaust
Valve Lift w/1.5 Rockers: .507'' Intake / .510'' Exhaust
Lobe Separation Angle: 110°

Do you think this will be too much cam for it and do you think i iwll be satisfied with the results

That cam's gonna put the torque peak at about 4500rpms or 5000rpms with some good heads. Killer. If you have a 700 tranny, of course, you'll need a 4000 stall to take full advantage. Vacuum assist brakes with 23* of overlap will probably be weak. Idle might need to be raised a little. Don't know what cam and mods you're coming from but if it's near stock you're in for a real surprise.

its fairly stock now.....has 305 heads and an edelbrock intake...those are the main mods. my plan is to do a wild 383 with that cam and some AFR heads and all forged internals mated to a 350 tranny with a gear vendors OD unit.

its actually not as wild of an idle as you think it would be, although it will definitly sound aggressive

i could actually go to a .517"/.523" lift but i think thatd be wayy too much and id need a LOT of converter to run it.....like 3500+

you need to build a 406 for that truck and be done with it, I have one and I will never build another 383, the torque diffrence is unreal!!!

If you want anything over a 406, i am gonna say get an aftermarket block. A 406 is just 400 block bored .030 over, 400 crank (3.75 stroke), and some 5.7 rods. that will give you 406 inches. I have one in an S-10, needless to say traction is an issue...
