same concept, no need to remove oil pump, or swap valve springs if you do a stock cam

Ok guys did a lot of work on my truck over the weekend. Lifters did not fail have compression on the motor all injectors are good, coils are good, I am at lost for words on what to do. I think I might just swap to a 4.8 and trade it in. Reason being. I won't have to deal with the fuel management **** and its cheaper for a whole motor. What should I do guys?

So, you have a noise with engine running, correct? Did you remove the drive belt, to see if it might be a water pump, alternator, ect? How do you know you don't have lifter or cam issue, did you pull the cam? Also, putting in 4.8 instead of a 5.3, then trading it is just wrong for the next guy. And if you owe $20,000 grand on it, you will be losing a lot more money then fixing this one.

So you pulled heads and checked lifters and cam over the weekend? Take any pictures of anything so we might be able to help you diagnose? Why did you think the lifters had colapsed in the first place? Was there a noise, los of oil pressure, something else? I think we need more info to truly understand the problem your having.

You would definetly be better off fixing the truck than trading it in. There is no way a dealership is going to give you 20K for a 2009 with a 4.8 so your going to be out money either way. With fixing the truck your not out as much money more than likely and you still get a truck out of the deal. Just my .02

First I suggest you stop panicking and running around like a chicken with its head lopped off.

If your valve train is good, doing a CAM swap is not that huge of a deal. If you have reason to believe the cam is damaged, just swap it out. Like others mentioned make sure you check other stuff for possible squeeks. I have never heard of a cam squeek, but the only places that can happen is either cam lobes on push rods, or bearing surfaces. Pull it out and check it. It may take most of the weekend to do, but then you will have a working truck and not worry about it.

Throwing a 4.8 in there is a **** idea. Even if the dealer doesnt notice, you will lose a bunch of money on the bank note, and if they do, no one will take it on trade.

Old thread I know, but out of pure curiosity, was the truck out of warranty? If not, why didn't you throw the stock tune in there and drive on over to the dealership? My wife's 09 Suburban had a DOD lifter fail and wiped out the cam, the valvetrain was replaced.

And what is with the 4.8L? If money is tight, you're only going to save a couple hundred and you won't have the same truck that you owe $20k on.
