+1 to TrendSetter, Since I have a MIG, I went ahead and welded it in rather than thread it and use JB Weld, but both ways are good. I haven't done this on an LS, but on my Nissan L6 the cylinder has to be pretty much right on TDC or the compressed air will spin the engine around! Also, it helps to pop the retainer with a rubber hammer before you try to use the spring compressor, sometimes they are really tight.

If you go with a compression tester hose, may need to pull the valve core out of the end, most of them are one way valves.... Still easiest and quickest and can be had at parts stores for about $10-20 for a cheap one.... As stated it is very doable just make sure you have the proper tools and TAKE YOUR TIME!!! Plan minimum of a long weekend for the springs and about a day for the cam, being that its your first!!!

Or a 19mm socket hit with a hammer on the retainer will loosen the keepers up as well....

non metallic hammer on the keepers at an angle is better IMO. wont mar up the keepers or shock any of the parts as bad.

Socket doesnt mar the keepers, one sharp whack with a 24oz ball peen will on occasion knock the keepers out(which i dont recommend doing in the vehicle...just tap them to loosen them) i use a rubber mallet on the valves to make sure the valve locks are seated properly arent coming back out, after swapping them. Maybe its old school practice but i was taught (by someone much wiser and experienced than i will ever be) a while ago to do so and i have never had a valve drop...

The cheap harbor freight compression test kit has the right size to hold valves up and the trickflow valve compressor works great.
Use wooden dowels to hold lifters up
Pretty easy i would plan 2 days if its your first time.
Get an arp crank bolt its hard to stretch oe bolt
