how concerned should I be about rust on a block
Well as most know, I smoked my engine. Well I found a 2005 6.0, and was thinking about going bigger. Well the engine is priced right, but the problem is the rust. The vehicle it was in was in a fire. The filler neck is melted, bit that's it. The block is real rusty. We were picking scale off with a screwdriver. It seriously looks like something that was sitting in the ding weeds for 30 years. The engine is a 2005 with supposedly 53k miles on it. I don't mind doing bearings, rings, and gaskets. Is this something that I should get? Or should I stay away because of the rust. Oh, I was able to grab the balancer, and turn it over easily. And I am not sure about the balancer. Would I be able to use my good flex plate off of my 5.3?

so long as everything that's supposed to be bolted to is it is still bolted to it then you shouldn't have to worry about the insides being fouled up. being able to turn it over by hand is a good sign...did you feel it build compression?

If ur doing bearings I would suggest you take it to a machine shop. They can check it and clean it up for $100 or so. I bought one that had years of caked on mud with bad bearings. Now it looks real good.
