Forged Cranshafts......where are they made?
figured this might be an interesting thread in which we can determine where the majority of aftermarket forged/billet steel crankshafts are made and their quality.
Do they come ready to run or require more work? I'll start with what I know
HTC(Hank The Crank)-Forged and Billet Steel Models-Made In The USA
Forged Crank Features:
HTC LS1 cranks feature the following:
E-4340 Forging
Lightweight profiling
Lightweight counterweights
Knife-edging
Fully detailed (no flash)
Eight lightening holes
Rifle-drilled
Ion-Plasma Gas Nitriding
Ion Nitriding of the forging creates a material with the following benefits:
35% stronger than the source forging
32% greater resistance to wear
Virtually distortion-free operation
Higher resistance to bending (flex)
Greater retention of finish grind dimensions (no growth in crankshaft journals)
The next step up would be their Billet Steel Crankshaft

You got me curious about where some of the big name cranks are made and after a short net search I think the answer is " it depends ". I think their premium lines are U.S. made and their cheaper lines are imported usually from China. Eagle (ESP) advertises "made in America". Scat's web site says " complete manufacturing capability right here in America". That sounds like a maybe to me. Other sites use equally ambiguous terms. Lunati (Division of Holley) states the company started in the U.S. in the 60s but doesn't mention where the parts are made. I hope some of you other guys with after-market cranks have more input.

I think Lunati, Callies, and Cola are about the only one's still forged in the US.

I have learned by example of the big 3 auto makers, just as long as ( I think ) 40% of the car is made here, it can be stamped made in the USA.
just like the cam company's, blanks can be brought in from any where, then cut on their machines and stamped with their logo.
as far as the quality of the blanks stock, it would depend on where it was made and what they consider to be that type of quality.
just look at 440 stainless steel, all are made in USA, China, Japan, and Taiwan,
and all 4 are different quality but carry the same stamp of that type of steel.
