Default First ever LS build

Alright guys, been off this forum for a while and figured since I have a truck and plan on going LS with it, then this is the place to be lol. So here goes the plans...
The truck is a RCSB 93 S10, plan to run stock suspension with tubular upper n lower arms up front with stock V6 coils. Not sure on shocks yet. The rear has drop leafs with one leaf taken out of the pack. Plan on making my own set of cal Trac bars and a good sticky radial.

So far I have a 4.8/5.3 bare block
LS1 crank from a 98 vette
LS1 heads from same car
No intake or cam as of yet. Already have emailed comp cams about a camshaft. This will be a mostly stock build with some porting on the heads and then a 150-200 shot on top. I'd definitely like to get as much out of it as possible NA. Truck will go on a diet as well.
As for a trans I'm in the middle on going with a T56 from a gto or running an auto. The truck currently is a manual. I have other plans later on to go turbo, but that's a ways away. Wanting to get some insight on what I have already and what you guys think would be the best bang for buck so to speak.

If you have rods and pistons out of the vette too you may look into getting your block bored to fit those pistons. If your after ET I would go auto IMO but you can't beat a manual in the fun department. Its all in how you will use the truck.

i do not have rods or pistons yet. thats why im at a crossroads with it. i can find a set of stock rods n pistons and just make a 5.3 with ported heads and cam. Id like to get around 10.5-11:1 on the motor. The heads are 241 castings as well. Should I just make it a stock bottom 5.3?

One other thing. Will the 241 heads fit properly on the 5.3 block? Since the LS1 had a bigger bore I'm a little concerned with clearance. If not how far can the 5.3 be bored?

how I use the truck is the reason why i am stuck between auto or manual lol. I like rowing gears even at the track but you just cant beat a well built auto when youre trying to stay consistent. the goal would be mid 9s on spray since its a light truck. looking to run a 275 60 15 DR for the street and if it works well enough the track as well.

I would get some 4.8 flat tops to help reach the compression you want. Yes the ls1 head will fit but the compression chamber is around 66.67cc but with flat tops and stock height gaskets you will be at 9.75:1. So the heads will need to be milled 0.03 and a 0.04 gasket to reach 10.5:1

IMO if you dont have pistons or rods yet you may as well get Ls1 pistons and rods to get the most out of your combo, that is of course if you can afford the cost to bore the block.

To me the easiest way for you to get the compression your after is to get a set of 99-06 5.3/4.8 heads and have them worked with larger valves and a port job since you were already planning on doing that with the 241 heads. If done correctly the 5.3/4.8 heads will flow just as well as the 241 heads would have but have smaller combustion chambers to get you the compression your after.

The Ls1 bore with the 5.3/4.8 heads un-milled and stock 0.050 head gaskets will give you just under 11:1 compression I believe.

Well the guy that had all the stuff I have had the heads cleaned and decked with a valve job. They are fresh out of the machine shop. Just don't know how much they've been milled down. I'll be checking them this weekend though and I'll let you guys know as soon as I know.

Edit: just got an email from comp cams and they suggested a 224/230 .581/.588 lift 114lsa
I was also thinking of the 4.8 flat tops. And the appropriate head gaskets to get it close to 11:1.

If you had the block bored to 3.905 for the ls1 flat top piston and milled 0.03 heads you would be around 10.8-10.9.

cam seems a little large for a n/a motor, but your s10 is light and can sacrifice some low end power. But seems like a solid cam for nitrous

That's what I specd it for. Later I'd like to convert to a snail but just for now I want to play on the bottle some. I traded a friend of a friend the 241 heads to a set of 806 heads. Already port matched them yesterday on the exhaust side only. They've been milled down .03 so I assume it'll have a little less compression then compared to a 241 head. Am I right or just blowing smoke out of my rear? Hahaha

Nice! Do you plan on porting the intake runners?
