Engine tear down DIY or Shop?
#1
Just now getting to my 6.0 that I think I spun a bearing or had a lifter fail. Should have it out next week and I'm torn between tearing it apart myself to find the point of failure or just taking the entire thing to a machine shop and have them disassemble it since they will be the ones rebuilding it. Kinda seems like a stupid question but I'd like to know for sure what the point of failure is since its likely my fault. I had planned to disassemble it myself but a few bromigos told me to just let the shop do it.

Time is not an issue I'm going to take it slower this time.
Money (within reason) is not an issue if there is a benefit to the new rebuild. Not sure what that would be exactly.
Physical ability is not an issue but mental capacity might be

Do it yourself. Take pictures, keep everything in order, document what's there, etc.; so that whatever info is contained in it, is preserved. But by doing it yourself, YOU know what's messed up (or not, up to a point) and can discuss intelligently with your machinist what you want done. Do it slowly and meticulously so you don't miss anything.

Do half of it yourself. I pulled mine apart, took the block and rotating assembly to the shop, had them clean and inspect everything and assemble the rotating assembly then did everything else myself. I have a lot of tools and know how, but there is some stuff best left to a good engine shop.

Thanks for the responses
I think I will end up doing it myself, seems as though there's no real benefit to having them do it. I'll be sending them everything I think is salvageable anyway, I hope the block and heads are alright.
