try again. california has a new law that ALL parts installed aftermarket on ANY california registered vehicle is REQUIRED to have a CARB EO number or will fail the visual inspection.

California Vehicle Code, section 27156 (VC27156) and the Federal Clean Air Act(CAA) prohibit vehicle modifications which increase motor vehicle emissions. These "anti-tampering" provisions effectively prohibit the sales of after-market parts which are not functionally identical to the parts they are replacing. However, since most properly engineered parts do not increase emissions, the laws allow for exemptions for the installation of parts proven by their manufacturer and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) not to increase emissions. The process by which these exemptions are granted is via an Executive Order (EO). Each EO is assigned a number which is required on all after-market parts

Database: Aftermarket Parts Database of Executive Orders

within this link you will find all parts that carry the EO numbers and are allowed on certain vehicles.

Products in Progress List - This list expired on December 31, 2011, and is no longer available for viewing. Add-on and modified parts without an Executive Order after this date will cause the vehicle to fail the visual portion of the Smog Check inspection. Diesel vehicle owners may view additional information regarding these parts.

when they hook up the cars OBD2 port they compare the data to a stock vehicle. lets say for the sake of argument the vehicle in question is a 2000 silverado. all STAR smog stations have to access your OBD2. the database has from GM the factory installed data they install on your PCM. if anything is different because you are going to have to tune for the cam the machine will automatically fail your truck based on the PCM data being altered.

Haha wow you are giving them way way too much credit. The system isn't that complicated. I'm not talking about a hand full of guys who have already beat this system. We are talking about 100s of dudes who have passed with a cam. Unless something has changed at smog stations in the last few months. The carb crap has existed for years now. I'm not saying you can run a donkey dick cam with 244/248 duration, but plenty of guys pass with sub 224 duration cams.
