Question Cleaning a Cam?

Not sure if this is the right place for this post but...

I have a Cam with some slight surface rust, what is the best way to get this cleaned up and make this useable again?

I would treat a cam like you treat clear coat paint... 1500-2000 grit sand paper at most and then find some kind of metal polish and get it to nearly a mirror shine.

Cam lobes are case hardened so take off as little material as possible. You don't want to affect the hardness at all or the lifters will destroy it.

I would think it it was just surface rust you could let it soak/spray a strong cleaner on it then spray it with wd40 or something similar and wipe it down good with a rag.

A engine machine shop can polish it like a crankshaft. That is what I'd do.

I would take it to a machine shop, too. If they say that they can't fully clean it up, then scrap it. One pit on a cam lobe, or a lifter wheel, or a wheel bearing roller for that matter, and they will self-destruct.
