camshaft/ convertor recomendations for towing
#1
wanting to do a camshaft in my 07 crew cab, long tubes and a 2/4 drop with some 4:10 gears, i just was wondering if anyone has done a cam swap and used their truck to pull anything such as a boat and how it did with a little stall like 2500 or so? just looking for some opinions. thanks

a small cam like the xr259 to keep the low end power would be good but higher stalling torque converters just slip more and create more heat when towing, if you had to have one i would say the yank tt2600 but no bigger.

What size engine, 5.3? Look at the cam in my sig, I think that something like that would be excellent, you could go for more lift though. I've been getting more and more interested in the famous Comp 212/218 high lift for situations like yours, but that's as big as I'd go for towing personally. A tight 2600 converter would be perfect also...the Yank TT2600 is a proven performer, and Circle-D has a reworked trailblazer converter that they can build to 2600 for you. I have a Circle-D that I haven't driven yet, but I can tell you that the customer service was excellent...I actually plan to call Chris at Circle-D this week to rework my converter to a 3K-3200 (it's currently a 2600-2800), I'm sure that it will be another pleasant experience.

The way it's tuned will have a lot to do with what the idle sounds like also...

I tow a 5k+ camper with cam in sig. and a yank TT2600. Works Great! I have the stock oil cooler and have never seen tranny temps. over 195*. I will be adding a 40k cooler this year for a better safety margin though.

As long as the converter stays locked, a little higher stall shouldn't be an issue. Mine stays locked unless I come up to a hill, and in that case just shifts down to 3rd and locks up again. If you're just looking for a little torque multiplication without downshifting, a 2600ish stall would be fine. But if you are concerned about mileage while towing, higher stall isn't bad as long as it stays locked. Either or.

sorry to thread jack but would a yanktt3000 be too much for hauling 2 seadoos which weigh less than 1500lbs? thats all i really tow besides a small utility trailer for mowing and i dont want to lose that towing ability... also have the tru cool 40k cooler.
thanks

FWIW, many people have run the VHP 'trucker' cam N/A with good results. It nets a good increase in torque on a 5.3 liter. I try to stay out of boost when I'm towing anything heavy, and it's wayyy better than stock, in my own experience. Cam specs are in my sig. I'd say go with a 2500 or 2600 stall with it.
