There is a good bit of room between the lifter and the cam if the lifter is pulled up all of the way. And there is still a lot of room between the cam and the oil journal that you are using to put the dowels in. I dont mean to undermine your judgement but it still sounds as if you dont have the dowel in there all of the way.
Thanks

) Take your dowel, and cut it a few inches longer than the engine block. Put three water pump bolts into the cam bolt holes. Spin the cam a couple of times (I always go both ways too) insert the dowels all the way till they bottom out on the back side. then carefully slide the cam out. When you get the first 4 lobes out, the rear cam journal (I guess thats what its called) is going to drop off the rear bearing (actually the next to rear) this is where I think the cam is hanging up. Use the bolts to get a little leverage and find the next bearing and slowly keep pulling the cam out. It takes a little paitence, but once you experience what Im talking about you'll understand. Also when you go back in with it you will experience the same thing. Before you get the cam all the way out. (I do this when the 3 main cam circles are out the block or a little before. Pull the bolts out and grab the cam with your other hand) You are essentially using one hand to guide the cam, and the other to pull it out.

Funny you should post this. This just happend to me last week during my install. Turned out my dowels would not make it all the way in due to them hitting the jurnal walls, I guess this is why they have a flat side to the one's they sale. Anyway the cam got STUCK the same way this one did and I just had to show it who the boss was sorta speak. Give it a good wiggle and it will come out for you.

on what Matt said and if you get hung up somewhere in pulling the cam out simply rotate the cam as a lobe might be hanging it up. Good luck
