building a iron LS1
#1
I have heard that a true ls1 crank is lighter than a 5.3 or 6.0 is this true ? just lookin into it before i build my 5.3 into a 5.7. also wander if it will be worth gettin one

It is lighter, but the crank is gun drilled on the mains only for better bay to bay breathing, so the weight only being removed from the centerline of the crank isn't that big of a deal, in which case I wouldn't personally spend too much time looking for one.

Don’t get me wrong, if you already have one you could use, it wouldn’t hurt a thing and better bay to bay breathing is not something to ignore. It’s just when the original LS1’s came out, the blocks were not cast with windows in the main webs like later model blocks and were drilled for better breathing. And with the weight being removed from the centerline that it’s not as a dramatic effect as it would be if the weight would have been removed from the rod throws or counter weights, as is typical from a true performance derived crank. Some also feel that the solid cranks are slightly stronger, but there again I wouldn’t stress too much over that either. Weight is weight and it all adds up, but in this case I believe you would be better served looking at the rods and pistons themselves. I’m sure there are others that also have an opinion on this subject and am sort of curious as to their thought as well.
