Define not ready? Just asking, cause you will have a ton more labor and money in a 408 then you would buying a decent turbo kit for your current engine.

Less of a question of being ready, more I don't want to put a turbo on this motor and run the risk of blowing it, 2 to 3 grand blow with it vs 2 to 3 getting a 408 started and having a 4.8 for back up should anything happen. Basically I don't want anything more to do with putting money in this little motor not saying I can't make power with it because theres a guy with a red GMC 4.8 making 900 to the wheels on youtube claims its the fastest 4.8 in the country.

The guy you are referencing with the red 4.8 is a member on here (foose04). You may want to PM him and see what he has to say about keeping your 4.8 and boosting it. He didnt blow his until over 900RWHP so if your only shooting for 450-500 then your 4.8 can live in that range with boost all day long with the proper tune and supporting mods. Plus you will get better gas mileage and better drivablity out of a boosted 4.8 over a 408. We are not trying to bash your original plan we are simply trying to let you know an alternative that would most likely cost less and be just as reliable if not more.

To answer your question on heads for the 408......stay away from your 4.8 heads or 317 heads, use L92 or Ls3 if you want to stay with a factory casting or you can check out some aftermarket castings as well.

for the record... in my personal truck I'd take a small cube (as in 6.0) turbo motor over a stock headed n/a 408 ANY day of the week...

I ran a very simple 408 in my DD for the past three years. Stock LS3 heads and intake with a 231/239 114+2 cam. That set up would easily meet your goals. But don't let the simplicity fool you. It will cost you the same, if not more, to build the 408 over a boosted 4.8L. And you will make a lot less power with the 408. At least if you blow the 4.8L, you can go buy another one for less than 500$. If you hurt the 408, it is most likely going to end up costing a lot of money to fix.

I just took the 408 out of my truck a few weeks ago because I spun a couple rod bearings. I went to the junkyard, bought a 4.8L and will be putting a turbo kit on it. I'm pretty much going the opposite way you want to go but I will be making a lot more power than you for less money... Food for thought

Check out my build thread in the project section. That might be a good read for you
