Default I think its time......

I have finally rolled 400,000 miles on my truck. Im still happy with it but its really showing its age. The driver seat has tears in the leather and it feels like im sitting on a 5 gallon bucket. The clear coat has been peeling for the last couple of years. As well as various other things that are just getting tired. The engine is still strong but the transmission could use refreshing. Hell after towing an enclosed 2500lb trailer for 100,000 miles and a 3000+lbs grannite trailer for about 15,000 miles all while not being afraid to let it eat I would be tired to. Many mods in my sig have well over 200k on them and are still working great. It really shows how well some of these performance parts and tunes have held up over the years. But after driving the moon and damn near making it back I think im ready to get into something newer.

So after doing some searching I think I have settled on a used 2014-2017 GMC crew cab Denali. I have always wanted a truck with the Denali package. My current Sierra SLT has just about all the options except for the Denali package. The 5.3 LM7 has performed well but i have always wanted the larger 6.0l engine. This time around I want the 6.2l But I have some questions about the transmission options and what you guys have experienced in your newer trucks. I have heard some people have complaints about the 8 speed and I have a friend that loves his 6 speed. What issues have you guys had with either transmission and what do you guys like about them? I obviously tend to hang onto vehicles for a while and do plan on modding a newer truck to a similar level over time. Just looking for some input.

I love my 18 6.2. It has the 8 speed and no complaints.

Downside to the 17 and up....
Expensive to tune. It takes more credits with HP Tuners. Last time I checked around $600+ in credits to access engine, trans, FPCM.

You can check around on the HP Tuners forum for more info on the 17 and up tuning and cost.

I also had a 16 5.3 that I liked also.

Thanks Dusty05! I do tend to hang onto vehicles for a while and transmissions have always been an issue. The 4l60e has been at times a pain in the a$$ in my truck now and with the several transmission changes that GM has been going through I was curious on how they all held up.

Also thanks for the heads up with the tune cost. I didn't know that it would cost so much. Is that because of the model year and it being so new? Meaning in a few years the 17' will come down in price because of its age?

From what I've been reading in the hptuners forum, I don't think the tuning costs will drop due to the R&D.

Not meaning to throw a wrench into the thread- but do all Gen 5s require the additional credits? I'm eyeballing a 2014..........

It's a slightly different controller. It's a E92 for 14-16 and a E92A for 17+. Different programming within that is required to unlock the computer for aftermarket tuning.

Even my 17 HD reqired 4 credits and an online unlock with its junk E78 controller. It' not unique to the E92.
